What Makes Lombok Worth the Trip
Lombok sits just east of Bali and offers something slightly different: wide open beaches, a towering volcano, three car-free islands, and a local Sasak culture that feels genuinely its own. It’s not a replacement for Bali — it’s a natural next chapter for curious travelers who want to see more of Indonesia.
Lombok travel rewards those who make the crossing. The island is growing fast in recognition, but still has that rare quality of feeling unhurried.
Things to Do in Lombok
Lombok Beaches The south coast is exceptional. Kuta Lombok has long white sand and great surf. Selong Belanak is wide, calm, and rarely crowded — perfect for beginners. Tanjung Aan offers striking turquoise water across a double bay. For something unique, Pink Beach in East Lombok has naturally rose-colored sand from crushed red coral, with excellent snorkeling.
Gili Islands Three small islands off Lombok’s northwest coast — no cars, no motorbikes, just bikes and horse carts. Gili Trawangan is social and lively with great dive shops. Gili Air is quieter but still has excellent food and diving. Gili Meno is peaceful and romantic, ideal for couples. Snorkeling with sea turtles is common on all three.
Mount Rinjani Indonesia’s second highest volcano at 3,726m, with a stunning crater lake at the top. The trek takes 2–4 days and is open April to December. A certified guide is required, but the trail is accessible for most fit travelers. Not a hiker? The waterfalls at the base — Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep — are easy to visit and very beautiful.
Sasak Culture Lombok’s indigenous Sasak culture has its own language, architecture, and culinary traditions. Visit Sade Village near Kuta to see traditional weaving and local crafts. Try Ayam Taliwang — Lombok’s famous spicy grilled chicken. Don’t leave without it.
Lombok vs Bali — Do You Have to Choose?
Not at all. They complement each other well.
Bali is rich in temples, ceremonies, art, and spiritual energy. Lombok offers wide open space, quieter beaches, and a more rugged natural landscape. Most travelers who do both say they’re glad they didn’t skip either one.
The easiest approach: base yourself in Bali, take the speedboat to Lombok for a few days, and return. Two islands, one trip.
Getting from Bali to Lombok by Speedboat
The speedboat Lombok crossing runs daily and is easy to organize.
Padang Bai (East Bali) — fastest crossing, 1.5–2.5 hours to Bangsal Harbor. Most operators include shuttle transfers from South Bali hotels. Best option for guests in Ubud or East Bali.
Serangan / Sanur (South Bali) — better for guests in Kuta, Seminyak, or Canggu. Travel time around 2.5–3 hours. Operators like Gili Getaway and Blue Water Express depart daily.
Most boats arrive at Bangsal Harbor, a 15–20 minute local boat ride from the Gili Islands. For Kuta Lombok, arrange a private car transfer in advance (~2 hours south).
Day trip possible? Yes — for the Gili Islands. For Kuta Lombok, Pink Beach, or Rinjani, plan at least 2–3 nights.
Best Time to Visit Lombok
May–September is ideal: dry, sunny, calm seas. Book speedboat tickets early. October–April is wet season — some crossings may be delayed, and Rinjani is closed November–March. April and October are sweet spots: good weather, fewer crowds, better prices.
